Scottish Gin Club - Kintyre Botanical Gin - October 2018

Our featured gin this month for our Gin Club members is Kintyre Botanical Gin from Beinn An Tuirc Distillery.

At Craft56° we love Beinn An Tuirc and their ethos. Find out more about the distillery and the gin below.

The Distillery

Based in a former piggery in the grounds of Torrisdale Castle Estate and built by brothers Niall and Kenny Macalister Hall, Beinn An Tuirc is an exceptionally socially responsible distillery.

Not only do they use sustainable botanicals but their copper still is powered by their own on-site hydro-electric scheme, they plant a tree for every case sold AND they use a portion of their profits to help local community projects!

The Gin

Kintyre Gin Botanicals

Kintyre Gin is made using 12 sustainably sourced botanicals. To achieve the well-balanced spirit, the gin consists of 10 commonly used botanicals, with the addition of 2 which are unique, namely Icelandic moss and sheep sorrel – both of which grow in abundance on the estate. The result is a gin with earthy and spicy characteristics, deep in flavour with a very pleasant floral aroma. The gin is a true reflection of the unique coastal, pasture and woodland position on the east coast of the Kintyre peninsula.

The Still

Kintyre Gin is made in a small copper pot still which was imported from Germany and has a fill capacity of only 230 litres of spirit, resulting in a truly hand crafted gin.

The still is named Big Don, a nod to Niall and Kenny’s father who sadly passed away during the initial stages of the distillery’s development.

The Batches

Instead of numbering the batches, all the batches are named after places significant to Kintyre. To do this, they follow the Gaelic alphabet which is slightly more forgiving as it misses out some of the tricky letters!

Perfect Serve

Kintyre Gin Perfect Serve

Equally at home being served neat on the rocks or with a premium tonic – we recommend Walter Gregor - and finished with some fresh mint.

If you'd like to receive November's Gin of the Month then join our Gin Club by 5th November.
