May's Gin of the Month - McLean's Something Blue

This month our Gin Club members are enjoying an exclusive pre-launch of the limited edition Something Blue from McLean’s Gin.

McLean’s Gin

Launched in September 2017 and based in the southside of Glasgow, McLean's Gin is (probably) the smallest batch gin producer in Scotland. The gin is made using a process used since the 17th century in their 1.5m sq. 'gin lab' aka the living room cupboard!

McLean’s do everything by hand including bottling, sealing and labelling.

Something old, something new, something borrowed, Something Blue…

McLean's Something Blue Gin Bottle

The 6th expression to be released  by McLean’s and crafted to celebrate the marriage of the makers Colin & Jessica on 02.06.2018, Something Blue focuses on their two favourite botanicals; the Tonka Bean and the Buchu Leaf.

Tonka Beans hail from Central America (where Colin and Jessica first travelled together) and resemble small raisins with the nose of vanilla, marzipan and caramel, with hints of freshly cut grass, clove and magnolia. Tonka Beans are pretty scarce but provide a vital source of income for many families in Central America. Something Blue is made using only Fair Trade tonka beans.

Buchu Leaves are native to Southern Africa and have an intriguing and invigorating fragrance with primary notes of blackcurrant, mint, mango and fresh, hand-rolled tobacco, with a herbal nuance. Buchu first travelled to the UK in the late 1800s in the form of extracted essential oils. Traditionally used as a herbal remedy for ailments of the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts, the leaves are known to have both diuretic and antiseptic properties due to their high concentration of various phenolic compounds.

These botanicals are then combined with 5 secret botanicals in a way that has never been done before to produce McLean's most unusual, exciting gin yet.

Only 150 bottles of Something Blue are being produced and each bottle is individually numbered.

Perfect Serve

Serve over ice and mix with your favourite tonic (we recommend Fever Tree Indian Tonic) before finishing off with a slice of cucumber and a sprig of fresh mint.

Sugarsnap Something Blue Gin Chocolates

To complete the extra special box this month we paired the gin with handmade chocolates made by Sugarsnap Chocolate & Confectionery that contain the McLean’s Something Blue Gin, Tonka Beans, and Caramelised White Chocolate in 70% Fleur de Cao.
